Step 1: Identify relevant information in sources

You should have received from your instructor a set of 8 short reading passages.  Your first job is to read through these passages and identify information that will help you answer this prompt:

 

Why should we protect the earth’s tropical rainforests?

 

You will use this information to write a short composition that contains some background information, followed by your reasons, and then a brief conclusion.

Tip:  These are very short reading passages, so you should have little trouble finding relevant information quickly.  However, when you’re dealing with longer passages, book chapters, or full-length articles, it may be helpful to skim and scan the texts.  This will help you identify the information you need to extract more quickly.

 

You Try

For each passage, begin by quickly reading it to understand the gist or main point of the whole passage.  Then, go back and identify the key information related to your topic, highlighting or underlining it.  Two of the passages have already been marked for you as examples.

As you read and highlight, try to identify the subtopics (in this case, categories of reasons) that the information you have selected might fit into.  This will be important for the next step.
