I assigned this activity during a unit on English Idioms.  My students came for a three-week session in which they practiced their English, learned about American culture, and developed leadership skills.  I was in charge of their morning English lessons, and our focus was on learning and using American idioms.  We were especially working on building their speaking skills and confidence.  After studying a set of idioms related to shopping, I planned a scavenger hunt activity at a nearby Whole Foods that had just opened down the road.  Students were to look for items that were “a steal” or that they “could do without” and so forth.  They also had to interact with people in English to find items.  Students used their cell phones to take pictures of the items they found and uploaded them to VoiceThread.  They then added voice comments describing the item using an idiom.
